How to Update WordPress

Today I quickly review how to update WordPress. If you’re experiencing difficulties and get the “fatal error” message when trying to update. Do the following:

  1. Deactivate ALL plugins
  2. Update WordPress
  3. Reactivate all plugins

With that, you should be good to go. If you have any questions or issues, don’t hesitate to ask them below!

Something I would add is to avoid updating immediately, as all the kinks might not necessarily be worked out. Feel around a bit, see what others are saying, and make sure it’s stable before committing.

Same goes for plugins. I updated my Google Analytics plugin once immediately when there was a new version available and it broke my whole blog because it had a bug.

You have to keep in mind that WordPress (and all associated plugins) are open source software (which is great, I love open source), so by nature they’re never 100% perfect and always evolving. Just always be cautious!

Thanks for the addendum Tim. I don’t think I’ve ever IMMEDIATELY updated a plugin or Wordpress – It usually takes me a little bit to recognize the need to update is there, but good to know that updating TOO fast can also potentially cause a problem.
